| Léslea Newman's Newsletter ~ November 27, 2007 Dear Faithful Reader, Well, imagine my surprise when I realized that I hadn't sent out a newsletter since last May! I hope you had a wonderful summer, are enjoying the fall, and are happily preparing for whichever holidays you and your loved ones celebrate. I have some news to share regarding the wonderful world of poetry. This summer I finished a book-length manuscript entitled NOBODY'S MOTHER and it is out being considered by several presses (keep your fingers crossed!). In the meantime, I have placed several individual poems in journals and magazines. "Never Again" was selected by Marge Piercy to be included in a future issue of LILITH, which is a wonderful Jewish, feminist magazine I highly recommend. And two other poems, "Archie the Floorwaxer" and "Upon Hearing that the Second Avenue Deli Is Being Replaced by Chase Manhattan Bank" are forthcoming in Cimarron Review. In the wonderful world of prose: I have been writing personal essays and publishing them on the web at www.obit-mag.com. You can find them here: "Helping Victor Die" can be found at: www.obit-mag.com "When Death Came to Call" can be found at: www.obit-mag.com It's an interesting website full of great writing. I am very pleased with the illustrations, too. As far as my novel, ThE RELUCTANT DAUGHTER goes, I am getting closer to landing a publisher. Nothing definite yet, but I hope to have good news by the next time you hear from me. And now onto the wonderful world of children's books: A new picture book of mine, MISS TUTU'S STAR has been bought by Abrams Books and I am thrilled to be working with them again (they published THE EIGHT NIGHTS OF CHANUKAH last year). The book is about a clumsy little girl who loves to dance (another example of a thinly disguised autobiographical work of fiction!). Tricycle Books, the good folks who published THE BOY WHO CRIED FABULOUS (out this year in paperback) is publishing two board books of mine, due out in 2009. MAMA, MOMMY, AND ME and DADDY, PAPA, AND ME will be the first board books ever published for kids with two moms or two dads. I think of the books as the younger siblings of HEATHER HAS TWO MOMMIES. Tricycle Press also published KING AND KING and have been wonderful to work with and a fabulous supporter of the LGBT community. RUNAWAY DREIDEL! has also just been released in paperback, after being out of print for a while, so I'm happy the book will have a second life. HACHIKO WAITS continues to be placed on state award lists (most recently Iowa) and will be coming out in paperback next year. A movie, not based on my book, but about the dog Hachiko is being made by Richard Gere, who will star in it (!). This should be very interesting and could bode very well for book sales. The movie is being filmed as we speak, and is due out in 2008. My last bit of news: I am also once again taking on private students and doing manuscript critiques. So if you are a budding writer and would like feedback on your work, send me an email and we'll talk.
We enjoyed our first snowfall today and it was quite lovely. Happy winter to all!
